Mute magazine's anthology, Proud to be Flesh: a Mute Magazine Anthology of Cultural Politics after the Net, 2009, spans a 15 year period which begins in an atmosphere of cautious optimism regarding the World Wide Web's potential to invade the control tower of communication, to usher in the great unwashed onto the global stage of media; and ends in the chaos of the financial crisis, borne of many of the same networks, whose effects involve the further impoverishment and exclusion of the world's poor and dispossessed as they are asked to foot the bill.

Mute, with invited friends, will give a brief introduction to the anthology, and open up a discussion of the wider dynamics of ubiquitous networks, globalisation, immaterial labour and the harnessing of culture in the creative economy whose trajectories this book charts.

Hamburg based cultural quarterly, Kultur & Gespenster, joins us for a party afterwards.

Friday's event will be preceded on Wednesday 27th October at 10pm (doors open at 9) by Mute's screening at Basso of Dušan Makavejev's Sweet Movie (1974), coverage of which featured in Mute 13. This issue, together with Proud to be Flesh and other relevant back issues of the magazine will be on sale on both nights.
