86 AND STILL ROARING. EX-SCIENTIST AND PLAYWRIGHT TURNS TO NOVELS

After a lifetime in marine science and playwriting, Plymothian Dr. Eric Corner has turned to novels. The first was published last year, the second is on its way. ‘There is a renewed interest in crime writing,’ said Eric Corner, ‘and I intend to ride that particular wave in my nineties.’ Written by hand, they are then typed up by an 'amanuensis' who lives in Tavistock.

Inspector Stanford’s Conversion, Eric Corner’s first novel, is a plot-driven detective thriller. A tale of intrigue involving multinationals and, at the same time a story with a strong West Country flavour, Inspector Stanford’s Conversion is a detective thriller full of twists and surprises. With a strong storyline and a fine cast of characters it is compelling reading from first to last page.

Author Eric Corner, writing under the pseudonym, Sam Napier, has written a number of successful plays for both radio and TV including for the BBC/ITV, LWT and Yorkshire. His plays have been shown around the world.

Born in 1924, Eric Corner has lived in the West Country for over fifty years, both in Cornwall (Saltash, Pillaton) and Devon (Plymouth). 'Living in Devon where so many great thriller writers like Agatha Christie have lived and often set their characters and plots has been a great inspiration to me,' says Dr. Corner.

Dr Corner pursued a successful career as a scientist, writing mostly in his spare time. For most of his working life he was at the Marine Biological Association on Citadel Hill, eventually becoming Deputy Director. Before that he saw war service in Italy and then qualified as a scientist in London after the war.

In the 1980s he stopped writing in order to concentrate on a scientific career. After retirement, however, he went back to writing in the 1990s and turned to a new medium, novels. He has written two novels so far – the latest, Blind Death, will\ be published soon - and has ideas for more.

He is a widower and has one son and one grandson (a second one is due in November).
