ALIVESHOES blends Art and Fashion blend

By Emma Stewart, 27 May 2010

Ongoing project fuses artistic expression with fashion and sustainability

ALIVESHOES is a project that crosses the boundary between contemporary art and fashion. Using ALIVESHOES, artists create visionary installations, sculptures and stories. This project is bringing together the worlds of artistic expression, fashion and sustainability.

The thing about ALIVESHOES is that they are real shoes, enlivened by being used to construct unique installations. Every ALIVESHOE honours Italian shoe making traditions and pays strict attention to the materials, detailing, quality and aesthetics. Each shoe is manufactured by hand using environmentally-friendly materials and processes.

The art works are all temporary sculptures, including urban and rural installations and video works. After living for a short span of time, the installations are deconstructed and the limited numbers of shoes utilized in the designs are offered for purchase completing the sustainable cycle.

Profits from the ALIVESHOES project sales are donated to a number of charities and sustain the art and fashion project by funding and supporting the creation of new artwork. People can place their own value on art by determining the “Alive Value” of the shoes for sale.

“Beyond art and fashion, the ALIVESHOES experiment is also able to weave in other global topics and issues — from ecology to technology and the economy. For example, we use sustainable materials and environmentally-friendly processes to manufacture ALIVESHOES. We also use the Web as a means of exhibiting the artwork and connecting people around the world. ALIVESHOES also helps to contribute to the global economy through charitable giving.”
