15/09/2007 - 10:30am 26/09/2007 - 6:00pm Etc/GMT Port City Events, Sep - Oct 2007 www.arnolfini.org.uk Port City: Symposium Presenting and discussing ideas which have informed the Port City project, this symposium examines three strands of discussion: global economic conditions of trade and their effects upon port cities, the new cultural geographies of globalisation and the lasting effects of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, as reproduced in contemporary British culture. Speakers including Maria Thereza Alves, Weyman Bennett, Ursula Biemann, Paul Domela, Raimi Gbadamosi, Melanie Jackson, Kate Rich, Tom Trevor, Lola Young, Claudia Zanfi. Cube Tour: A Port City Seminar A Bristol cultural icon, the Cube Microplex opens its doors for an unprecedented, unofficial tour. Often the first port of call in Bristol for visiting musicians, migrant students and itinerant cinema labourers, the Cube has developed a unique economy supported by a large volunteer work force. This tour will be a candid walk through the economics, dreams and operations of a socially-run cinema that more or less bypasses Government patronage. Presented by Cube operations staff past and present. Art Movement: A Port City Seminar Meet at Bristol Temple Meads station ticket barriers to catch the 12.08 First Great Western departure to Severn Beach for a travelling seminar onboard Bristol's most scenic railway, the Severn Beach line. Artists Anya Lewin, Heath Bunting, Kate Rich and Rasha Shaheen show works and strategies dealing with migration, transportation and mobility in the art world. Refreshments available. Seminar terminates at the Port City exhibition, Arnolfini. Duration approx 3 hours With Anya Lewin, Heath Bunting, Kate Rich and Rasha Shaheen. Curating Subjects Discussion To coincide with the launch of an anthology of new writing on curatorial practice Curating Subjects (London, Open Editions, 2007), Lucy Byatt, Claire Doherty, Nav Haq (Arnolfini's new exhibitions curator), Sophie Mellor, Paul O'Neill and others present and discuss exhibition projects which have been important to their practice The Far West Seminar Curators, critics and artists unpack parallel perceptions in terms of East and West, exploring how such projections of difference are absorbed in a local context. This is the concluding event of Zhang Wei's three-week curatorial research residency, hosted by Arnolfini in partnership with Relational, as part of the Curatorial Network programme.
