Description:
A celebration of London and one of its leading historians, Raphael Samuel (1934-1996). A day-long event (10am to 10pm) featuring panel discussions on London history and politics, and people's history today. Also films, exhibitions, bookstalls, music, and the 2006 Raphael Samuel Memorial Lecture. Speakers: Anna Davin (History Workshop Journal), Nicky Gavron (Deputy Mayor of London), David Gilbert (Royal Holloway), Tristram Hunt (Queen Mary London), Glenn Jordan (University of Glamorgan), Luisa Passerini (Turin University), Nick Raynsford (MP for Greenwich), James Vernon (Berkeley), Ken Worpole (writer and environmentalist), Jerry White (local government ombudsman).
City of the Future: Archive films of London presented by Patrick Keiller (director of London [1994] and Robinson in Space [1997]); Thames Memoryscape: Audiowalks designed and presented by Toby Butler; Adventures in the Lea Valley: Photo essay by Polly Braden and David Campany; Raphael Samuel Archive display; Raphael Samuel Memorial Lecture 2006 - 5:30 pm. Gareth Stedman Jones ( Cambridge ), 'The Redemptive Powers of Violence? Carlyle, Dickens and Marx on the Legacy of the French Revolution'. Bar and live music (rock, jazz, traditional) in the evening.
