Mute Publishing is looking for a Designer to work on Mute magazine Publishers' Blog

Mute Publishing is looking for a Designer to work on Mute magazine. Fee: £1,000 p/issue

Mute magazine is a long established title offering critical analysis of 'Culture and politics after the Net'. Since 1994 it has gone through many format changes, journeying through the guises of /Financial Times/-style newspaper, 'glossy mag', 'coffee-table book' and Print On Demand journal. Over more than a decade, it has experimented with a host of design styles, recently opting for a simple black and white template which can accommodate our use of Print On Demand technologies.

We are now looking for an experienced designer to take on the job of designing each – quarterly – issue of the magazine. The work involves using a template set by ourselves, but with scope for adaptation across individual articles. Additionally, there is interest in having the template revised in due course – either by the candidate, or in consultation with them and under supervision of an existing partner agency.

Mute is designed using the open source/FLOSS package Scribus, making a familiarity with this package (or a willingness to master it) essential. The candidate should also be able to confidently handle a staggered process of file submission, with occasional revisions, etc. being a matter of course. In the past, we have worked long-distance with designers, and are therefore open to such arrangements, but do now view availability for office work, meetings and shared working as a distinct advantage. The designer will be expected to work over, roughly, a three week period in advance of publication – and be paid per job rather than per day or week (the schedule and pay is set on past experience).

Mute production is also discussed on an email list, where s/he will be expected to follow relevant topics. The directors and Editorial team will be direct colleagues in our small organisation; good communication, teamwork and multitasking skills are essential.

To apply, please send us your CV to: Pauline van Mourik Broekman & Simon Worthington Mute, Unit 9, The Whitechapel Centre, 85 Myrdle Street, London E1 1HQ Email: pauline@metamute.org, Tel: +44 (0)20 7377 6949 DEADLINE Monday 5th November for interviews that week and a 12th November start (our apologies for this short notice).
