Hi Ed-heads,
I'm going to try and keep this brief. Here are the main points that
arose from yesterday's meeting:
1)Feedback from last issue. People want to see:
- Less reprints/ try to avoid them altogether
- Could do with some shorter articles right at the front, to lead the
reader in and create the right rhythm
2)We are looking for a way to reframe and restate the problem of
Multiculturalism (MC). Three things have emerged a) to link its
discourse/operation to the general production landscape of globalised
capitalism b)to examine the transformation of a race-based prejudice
into a culture-based one (for the purposes of creating a necessary Other
within the assymetry of capitalist social relations) c) to look at the
role of biotech within all of this.
Proposed Article List:
- 2 shorts: we want to take the UK Test and a Heritage DNA test and run
the results in the mag (these could be the 2 shorts at the beginning)
- Hari's proposal has changed; he will now write something on the
'culture of offence' and its crucial role in social policing.
- A comparative account of national approaches to the 'problem' of MC.
Pauline mentioned the recent escalation of the state's intervention in
the project of 'integration' in Holland and Denmark - we now lack a
writer for this story (Hari? any suggestions? Eric Krebber is one name
that's come up)
- A text which examines the culture/biology see-saw determining popular
discourses on identity. (Just when you thought that the scientific
production of race was becoming a thing of the past, and that the
complexity revealed by DNA's study had put paid to crass designations of
ethnic sameness and difference, we start to see a return of the race-IQ
Bell Curve etc.) Possible writers: Paul Gilroy, Ted Allen, Robert Young,
Marek Kohn
- Ben has proposed writing a text which, following on from Angela M's
piece on Corulla riots, analyses capitalism's production of the
Other/Foreigner as a means to stratify the labour force PRIOR to race.
This would be focused on Britain as the first fully capitalist
(industrialised) nation state.
- A text which could carry on where Matthew's Bradford riots article
left off, and which would attack the smugness over UK's putatively
multicultural society (writer? Matthew?)
- Genealogy of Respect (Kaveh)
- Genealogy of Integrations (???)
- A text which would analyse the demise of race-based utopias (from
Liberia to Afrofuturism). Hopefully this text would also foreground
music as a means of political production (Writer?)
- Still hoping to get Silvia Federici's text on New Orleans. Haven't had
a reply yet
Articles In:
Angela Mitroupolis on Corulla beach riots
over and out,
Josie
