PRESS RELEASE
'Under A New Sky,' is an 18 month long art project, that was originally
awarded to the curators Peter Lewis and Maurizio Bortolotti as part of
The Generator scheme conceived by Gavin Wade at UCE Birmingham, with Arts
Council West Midlands, whose chief aim was to support proposals from
professional curators that would advance and generate ideas for the
creation of new art to be located specifically in the West Midlands.
Generator sought to initiate a new wave of international projects to
bring out the potential, especially in consideration of cultural
regeneration. Under a New Sky brings 8 artists and 2 curators from the
international field with established backgrounds in working across many
public situations, to the heart of West Midlands. Their remit: to realise
works of art experienced in a series of events and exhibitions over a
longer time period than conventional museum and gallery exhibitions
offer. Encompassing performance, film, video, sculpture and architecture,
art works will be located in the terms of everyday life, in the
overlooked residues of urban landscape, specifically from within the
devastated area hit by the tornado. It will therefore fully ally with the
City Council's schemes for regeneration, from reinvestment in the social
and cultural platforms, to the political life to be shared by all its
inhabitants: workers, residents and their visitors alike.
A space situated in Balsall Heath will function as both an info -centre,
and gallery, introducing the background of the artists, their work, with
preliminary ideas and models for related works, in anticipation of the
future realisation of its individual projects. An important aspect will
be to offer training opportunities and teaching to local 16-25 yr olds,
who may be unemployed, which, through their participation and
collaboration with the artists and their curators, will provide the
support structure for sustaining the success of the project in the long
term.
The invited artists:
Reza Aramesh (Iran/UK)
Paul Eachus (UK)
Al Fadhil (Iraq/Italy)
Nooshin Farhid (Iran/UK)
Yona Friedman (Hungary/France)
Dan Graham (USA)
Runa Islam (Bangladesh/UK)
Goshka Macuga (Poland/UK)
The curators of the project are Peter Lewis (UK) and Maurizio Bortolotti
(Italy)
Under a New Sky presents works by artists for whom everyday life and the
city are the source of making art both in specific ways of life, and in
the shared day to day experience of urban living, good and bad, capable
of generating imaginaries for our mutual understanding and ability to
change the way we perceive the world and each other. At this difficult
time it is also of particular relevance to ask questions and seek answers
as to why unwanted conflict and suspicion has been fostered. Under a New
Sky is a move to bring artists and publics together to participate in
creating new platforms for rebuilding both the urban frames that have
been damaged and the confidence to re-establish dialogue.  In the
realising of new particular situations that may grow out of dereliction,
Under a New Sky reaffirms the universal possibilities inherent in the
activity of art, setting up a situation for different kinds of encounter,
and to stage the possibility for future dialogue between them.
The first 'Under A New Sky' exhibition, 'Phase 1:The Green Ray,' is on
Saturday 24th March at Nachurel records, Ladypool Rd
The date has been chosen as it coincides with an event to remember the
tornado that hit Balsall Heath in October 2005 devastating many of the
shops and local businesses in the area. Also happening that day is a
fun-filled event on the park in Ladypool Road with performances, rides
and stalls of a fair to celebrate the resilience of the local community
in the face of this natural disaster.
