[mnp] Fwd: [dorkbotlondon-blabber] Hack the Bridge

To: dorkbotlondon-blabber@dorkbot.org

Well some Idiots In Charge actually let us play with a couple of major
London landmarks, and after
several on-again-off-again traumas, there is now an interactive
lighting installation on Tower
Bridge, controlled by Bluetooth sensors on London Bridge.

This is part of a week-long lighting festival, Switched-On London
www.switchedonlondon.com ( note
not all the things on this site have actually happenned!), and is a
collaboration between Jason
Bruges Studio ( www.jasonbruges.com), Myself (www.electricstuff.co.uk)
and Traxon Lighting.

Assuming it doesn't crash, it will run from dusk to dawn - I think the
end date is Feb 16th

OK, enough admin, here's the inside Dork-Scoop on how to play with it
& 'Pimp Your Bridge.....'.

When a discoverable Bluetooth device is detected at one of two sensors
at the ends of London Bridge,
a pixel will appear at the corresponding end of Tower Bridge. The
colour and position depends on the
Bluetooth Mac address, and so will be the same for any given device.

If that device is subsequently seen by the sensor at the other end of
the bridge, the pixel will
start moving across the bridge, at a speed proportional to the time
between the detections.

During rush hour it will probably get rather swamped, but if you show
up late, you should be able to
have some fun with a BT device or 3 - just stand around 1/4 of the way
from one end, turn on your BT
device and wait for your pixel to appear ( scan period is about 15
seconds), then walk/run/cycle
towards the other end & watch....

Now for the real fun... I have a 'test' transmitter to allow some more
advanced remote-control
mischief, so if you want to participate in an Dorkbot impromptu
'bridge-hack', show up on London
Bridge, East side, or possibly the river walkway below on the NE side,
Sun 11th, around 10:30-11PM.
( My mobile is 07836 534292).
I will send an email to this list if this changes.

I'll probably also be down there Fri early evening (9th) to tweak the
speeds & effects etc. and
maybe some other dates - probably the 15th where there are some
'geurilla lighting' things going on.
