Grete Dalum-Tilds – My Garden
24 FEBRUARY - 7 APRIL 2007
'My Garden' is the first UK exhibition by acclaimed Danish photographer, Grete Dalum-Tilds. The private space of the back garden
provides the focus of this new series of images.
"Gardens have always been places apart, spaces of contemplation and respite from the travails of everyday life. They fulfil basic
human needs, producing sustenance and bringing us into contact with vital forces of the natural world".
- Joshua Arthurs, In These Times magazine, Jan 2007
The garden is ascribed to the feminine and leisure aspect of the suburban lifestyle. It is a private space of our own, in which you
are free and do whatever you want. Yet there are rules, visual as well as behaviourial with which you comply.
Dalum-Tilds' work provokes questions about private and public spaces, about what is personal, and explores the means by which one
defines their zone. The fence that keeps you in and others out is protective as well as prohibitive.
The photographer's garden is a studio. Different set-ups are tried and tested, for visual as well as playful purposes. In the
photographs there is an uncertainty, a whoosh and a blur, chasing the photographic moment, the absurd notion of perfection - an
instant that is inexplicable through language. Framed by the ordinary; laundry and kids at play, right there in the middle of it all
there is a visual synchronicity.
