A one-day conference celebrating the centenary of Cristopher Caudwell and his radical legacy.
Cristopher Caudwell is arguable the critic most important to the development of a Marxist theory of literature and culture. His work was widely read into the 1960s and Illusion and Reality, his most significant work was never out of print until about five years ago. Unlike most of what is classified as Marxist criticism, Caudwell was fundamentally concerned with practice and its relation to theory. The purposes of the conference are to bring together Marxists and other radical people involved in the politics of culture and the production, critique or appreciation of literature and other arts; to reassert the social character of cultural production and reaffirm the value of a Marxist approach to cultural understanding; and to celebrate Christopher Caudwell.
Tickets are free, but are limited and require booking. Bookings can be made through the library by phone or post.
